Cleveland is the second largest city in Ohio and is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie close to the Pennsylvania border. Founded in 1796 near the Cuyahoga River, Cleveland was named after General Moses Cleaveland by surveyors of his land company. Despite swampy lowlands and harsh winters, Cleveland’s location on the lake shore waterfront has been advantageous for manufacturing. Population growth accelerated after completion of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1832. Cleveland was then incorporated as a city in 1836.
Cleveland is home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Some common nicknames for Cleveland include The Rock ‘n’ Roll Capital of the World, C-Town, and The Cleve. Due to the proximity of Lake Erie, the Cleveland area is sometimes referred to as The North Coast. Residents of Cleveland are known as “Clevelanders”.
