Springfield, Illinois was originally Calhoun, Illinois, named after Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. The land was originally settled in 1818 by traders coming to the Sangamon River. Senator Calhoun fell from public favor by 1832, so the town was renamed to be Springfield, with Springfield, Massachusetts in mind due to its well known innovation and prosperity of that time period. In 1839 after Kaskaskia and Vandalia, Springfield became the third and current capital of Illinois, largely because of Abraham Lincoln. Springfield, Illinois is the only US State with a capital city named Springfield.
