The City of St. Louis is named after King Louis IX, who was later canonized as Saint Louis. The city is located on the eastern border of Missouri and was incorporated as a city in 1822. The metropolitan St. Louis area, also known as Greater St. Louis, is the most populated area in Missouri.
St. Louis was founded by Pierre Laclède and his stepson, Auguste Chouteau, in 1764 and became a major port on the Mississippi River after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Lewis and Clark left St. Louis in May 1804, reached the Pacific Ocean in summer 1805, and returned in September 1806. Both explorers lived in St. Louis after the expedition.
Located in downtown St. Louis, the city is easily identified by the Gateway Arch.
