SR22 Insurance

SR22 Insurance Filing

In the United States of America many states require the SR22 filing as a means to make sure drivers with auto violations / mandatory insurance issues are financially responsible (sr22 insurance filing). Basically the filing is attached to the individuals auto policy. This allows the state to monitor the insured to make sure they are keeping their auto insurance in force.

To write a policy with the Sr22 form attached the insurance company must be registered by the state to file the financial responsibility forms. An independent insurance agent in your city or state that is appointed with a state registered insurance company can help you process the SR22 filing.

Sr22 insurance is usually required for one to three years. The severity of the traffic violations will dictate how long the filing will be required. The following are some of reasons an individual would be required to have a SR22 filing.

1. Driving without state mandated auto insurance

2. An accident, insured driving without insurance

3. DUI, DWI, driving under the influence

4. Major violations or use of an automobile during a felony

A driver’s license can be suspended (sr26) for failure to maintain the auto insurance with the Sr22 filing attached. The filing can be reinstated or re-issued when the policyholder makes payment or re-writes the policy. If there is a lapse in coverage and the policy is later restored all prior SR22 filing time will be compiled and applied towards the insured’s total Sr22 filing period. Basically you could have several lapses in coverage taking you much longer to complete your original SR22 filing period. The state will contact you and the insurance company when the filing is completed
